Russian kettlebell Challenge Graduation Workout

As if the RKC workshop isn't difficult enough, the students had to pass a grueling workout to pass the course. The workout consisted of bear crawling with two kettlebells 100 meters and performing Kettlebell swings at every 10 meters. Give it a try, let me know what you think.

Perception is Reality

I was parusing through a fitness business magazine the other day and I could not help but notice that the magazine was featuring gym architecture and design. At first glance I was awe struck by the creativity and design and the hugeness of each of the facilities being shown. Most of the facilites shown were collegiate fitness centers, or neighborhood recreation centers in the U.S. I was completely amazed, these were multi million dollar facilities with vast quantaties of expensive and useless machines. I noticed one person exercising on a futuristic looking treadmill and the first thought that came to my head was, running is free, why would anyone spend so much money on a worthless peice of equipment. The U.S. has more exercise facilities than any other country in the world. Why is it then that we have the fattest most unhealthy people in the world?

Perception. People in the U.S. equate fitness with expensive machines. It's a known fact peoople in the U.S. are the hardest working people in the world we don't have time to exercise. And, when we do get the time we think we need machines and facny gym equipment or hey we just can't do it.

The real fact of the matter is that all we really need is a few dumbells, barbell or kettlebells. Most of this equipment can be purchased for about $150. All you need is the space to be able to do the exercises. That's it, all you'll ever need.

A Paradigm Shift

What seems like an eternity, has infact only been a couple of years. A couple of years ago a good buddy asked me if I had seen Russian Kettlebells... and I had. I had seen them in the ads of body building magazines, the marketing on these babies was heavy. I usually didn't pay any real attention to the ads at all, it seemed like just another gimmick. Sometime later, I reluctantly took a look a the dragoondoor website that hosted the Kettlebell Training, I was not impressed. After some time had passed I took another look at the website and this time I was somewhat intreged. I decided to enlist, that's what I call it because, the marketing was very militant and I am a former Marine and it had some appeal. I booked my flight an headed for St. Paul, when I arrived there was a scheduled meet-and-great. I showed up and no one in the room had acknowledged my presence. I walked in and started to introduce myself. After some time the Evil Russian Pavel Tsatsouline made his appearance, after he made his way around the room like a Rock Star, it was my turn. All I can remember was that he stood before me and asked, "are you scared." I looked him in the eye and said, "scared of what." He smiled and said, "good you look eye." That was my first experience with the kettlebell community.

I had attended the workshop/certification and all was good with the exception of a severe hangover that was the result of hanging out with an Army Ranger. No way in hell I was goin to let this Army Dog drink me under the table... I showed him... After attending the workshop I had scheduled a quick return flight. I was back at home by midnight, I new I had a 5:00 am client. I got what seemed like two hours of sleep and I arrived at my training sessions with my kettlebell. I was still sore from all the training we had done only a few hours before. As I walked into the gym, members and trainers alike made comments about this strange ball I was luging around.

Every trainer seemed to dismiss what I was doing, they were all to busy doing biceps curls and machine chest presses. I would go into the aerobics room and spend the day with my clients and my kettlebell. Sometimes people would come in and watch. On occassion a trainer would pick it up a try to immitate what I was doing, and I would have to keep him from killing himself. One by one they would try as the got more courageous. Two plus years later I can't get into the same training room to train my clients. They are all trying kettlebell training, or doing kb syle moves with dumbells. I like to think that I had some influence on them, but most trainers would deny that fact. I personally had a paradigm shift and year later, I think the trainers at the gym are having thier aha moment.

Muscle Memory

Muscle Memory—Much of the success of the Egoscue Method is based on its ability to reconnect individuals to their innate kinesthetic sense, or muscle memory, of how things feel beneath the surface. It is more basic than remembering that an overstuffed suitcase is going to be heavy or that a long walk in loose shoes will lead to blisters. Kinesthetic sense allows us to respond physically to the experiences that we have archived in our long-term memory.

Suppose my mind needs to know if my muscles and other physiological systems are capable of getting me up eight flights of stairs in a hurry. It reads the musculoskeletal system much the way a pilot checks his instrument panel before he decides to pull back on the stick and lift off. This internal assessment is taking place constantly, and the output not only results in a decision to hit the stairs or wait for the elevator, it leads to the creation of a general operational climate of health.

CrossFit Austin

Unleash Explosive Power, Make
Dramatic Gains with CrossFit!

Discover why CrossFit remains the workout-program of choice for Elite Athletes Worldwide … this extreme fitness system delivers a potent mix of Power, Strength, Flexibility and Conditioning. www.crossfitaustin.com

“CrossFit “A KICK ASS WORKOUT!”
-Mens Journal Magazine, 2005

A Workout That's Fast, Furious And Not For The Faint of Heart
-L.A. Times, 2005

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.

Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.

The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.

CrossFit training is a Core, Strength and Conditioning system built on constantly varied, functional movements, executed at high intensity. It is a non-specific program that rewards hard work with an overall fitness level unmatched by traditional means!

What you’ll get with CrossFit

Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance – the ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen

What - Paul Buentello, Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran says about CrossFit and The Egoscue Method.

“I attribute much of my success in the UFC to CrossFit. CrossFit has given me the strength and stamina that I need when I get into the later rounds. The Egoscue Method has help with my range of motion and has alleviated much of my aches and pains which has allowed me to perform better.”

-Paul Buentello, UFC Veteran

What Cullen Loeffler of the Minessotta Vikings says about CrossFit.

“CrossFit really helped me get in shape in the off-season, The CrossFit workouts are hardcore.”

-Cullen Loeffler, Minnesota Vikings

"Adam is helping me regain the athletic vigor I had in my youth. Remember that sensation of running with abandon? In addition to the muscle tone and power improvements, I feel like I’ve had a butt lift because my glutes are finally getting some intelligent workouts. Adam’s methodology is more effective than anything else I’ve tried, and he is the most knowledgeable trainer I’ve ever met. He is intuitive, and knows how far to push me, or when to back off for a more restful, regenerative workout.

My athletic resume includes state champion bodybuilder, certified yoga/Pilates/aerobics instructor, former rock climber, collegiate varsity athlete, etc. I thought I knew a few things about keeping fit. When I learned about CrossFit, I hooked up with Adam, and I’ve just signed up for a third round of training sessions with him. After being stuck in a rut, I’m excited about learning Olympic lifting technique, improving my track workouts, learning gymnastic moves and having a blast along the way. Adam has mastered everything from kettlebells to CrossFit to lifting – each workout is different, and uniquely designed for my capabilities and current state when I show up – he reads me like an open book. Adam coaches me on a variety of topics including technique, form, rowing sprint strategy, diet and rest days. Who could ask for more?

Renegade Speed

While many coaches in the so-called Strength and Conditioning all-boys club will whimper about how they are not responsible for win and losses of their teams, while they post another losing season – Renegade teams win because of our preparation and the mantle of responsibility is firmly on these shoulders. It is of course easy to linger with the rest of the coaching fraternity when you are used to being at the bottom of the heap but victory comes to only one and that is where Renegade teams have stood throughout my career. The choice is yours, make friends with the many who cannot step up to the bar or take the challenge and stand above the rest. This is not for the weak of heart or those that clamor for the sanctity of acceptance – this is for the closers, the winners and if you are not prepared for success, get out of the way.
